American YouTuber MrBeast has surpassed the Indian channel T-Series, which boasts over a quarter of a billion subscribers, to become the most popular channel on the platform.
MrBeast, whose real name is James Donaldson, gained initial fame in 2017 with a video of him counting to 100,000 over 40 hours. Although his follow-up video counting to 200,000 received fewer views, his channel has since amassed over 269 million subscribers.
T-Series, known for Indian music videos and movie trailers, became the most-subscribed channel in 2019, ending PewDiePie's six-year reign as the top YouTuber.
T-Series' dominance sparked debate within the YouTube community, with some viewing it as a shift from individual creators to corporate entities. On Sunday, MrBeast commented on X, saying, “After six years we have finally avenged Pewdiepie.”
Since his early videos, MrBeast has gained a reputation for high-stakes competitions. Notable events include a 2020 live-streamed rock-paper-scissors game with a $250,000 prize and a recent 100-person competition where the last person remaining in a glass cube won $500,000.
His most popular video currently is a real-life "Squid Game" inspired by the Netflix series, where contestants compete in games like musical chairs for substantial prize money.
As of 2022, Forbes estimated MrBeast's net worth at around $500 million. Earlier this year, the 26-year-old YouTuber reportedly signed a $100 million TV deal with Amazon.
