Nine More Cases Filed Against Sheikh Hasina, Including Charges of Murder and Crimes Against Humanity** In a significant escalation of legal challenges, nine additional cases were filed today against former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, bringing the total number of cases she faces to 31. These new cases involve serious allegations, including murder and crimes against humanity. One of the cases relates to the violent crackdown on a Hefajat-e-Islam rally at Shapla Chattar in Motijheel on May 5, 2013. A complaint was submitted to the International Crimes Tribunal (ICT), accusing Sheikh Hasina and 23 others of committing crimes against humanity and genocide during that operation. In addition to the ICT case, eight other murder cases were lodged against Hasina in connection with deaths that occurred during the recent unrest over the quota reform movement, which culminated in a mass uprising and the eventual fall of the Hasina-led Awami League government on August 5. These new charges have expanded the legal net to include Sheikh Hasina's son, Sajeeb Wazed Joy, her daughter, Saima Wazed Putul, and her sister, Sheikh Rehana, who have now been named co-accused in a murder case for the first time. **Details of the ICT Case** The ICT case was filed by Supreme Court lawyer Gazi MH Tamim on behalf of Mufti Harun Ijahar Chowdhury, a senior leader of Hefajat-e-Islam. The complaint alleges that Hasina and others orchestrated a brutal crackdown, resulting in mass killings of Hefajat activists in Dhaka and other regions on May 5-6, 2013. The investigation has officially commenced, and if sufficient evidence is found, the tribunal is expected to issue arrest warrants for all accused individuals. Among those named in the ICT case are several prominent figures from the former government and security forces, including Obaidul Quader, Rashed Khan Menon, and Sheikh Fazle Noor Taposh, along with various former ministers, lawmakers, and high-ranking officials from law enforcement agencies. **Additional Murder Cases** The other cases filed today cover a range of incidents linked to the violent crackdown on protesters and civilians during the final days of Hasina's government. These include the death of Farid Sheikh, a fruit seller killed at Hanif Flyover Toll Plaza in Jatrabari, and the death of Md Omar Faruque, a student at Kabi Nazrul Government College, among others. Victims' families have lodged these cases across various districts, including Dhaka, Savar, Narayanganj, Rangpur, Joypurhat, and Bogura. In each instance, local courts have directed police to register these complaints as first information reports (FIRs), signaling the start of formal investigations. As legal proceedings advance, the former prime minister and her associates face mounting pressure, with accusations of orchestrating a campaign of violence to suppress dissent. On Tuesday, the judge of the Cyber Tribunal accepted the case and directed the Officer-in-Charge of Barguna Sadar Police Station to submit an investigation report by October 9. The plaintiff, Abu Bakar Siddique, is the president of the Keorabunia Union Jubo Dal in Barguna Sadar Upazila. According to the case details, after Sheikh Hasina's resignation, on August 12 at 8:30 PM, Md. Jahangir Kabir, along with other Awami League leaders, spoke to former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina for three minutes and made the conversation viral on social media. The other accused also made the video viral using their mobile phones. The accusation alleges that the defendants acted with the intent to create fear among the general public by threatening the state's integrity, security, and sovereignty. Additionally, while the Awami League was in power, the defendants allegedly engaged in land grabbing and other misconduct. The accused include Md. Jahangir Kabir, Abdul Motaleb Mridha, Golam Kabir, Jubayer Adnan Onik, Shah Mohammad Waliullah Oli, Kabir Hossain, Jamal Hossain, Ruhul Amin of Bot Tala, Shahabuddin Sabu, Advocate Akhtaruzzaman Bahadur, Azizul Haque Swapan, Moniruzzaman Jamal, Alomgir Hossain, Mir Arafat Zaman Tushar, Rezaul Karim Reza, Advocate Sunam Debnath, Jalal alias Juta Jalal, Khalilur Rahman, Shipon Jamaddar, Akhtaruzzaman Rakib, Rana Talukdar, Murad, Advocate Humayun Kabir, Shawon Talukdar, Advocate Junaid Jewel, Abul Kalam Azad, Advocate Ashraful Islam Shilpi, Kabir Howladar, Belal Molla, Raihan Molla, and Ripon Dafadar. Among them, Md. Jahangir Kabir is already in jail in connection with two other extortion cases. Regarding the case, one of the accused, Advocate Ashraful Alam Shilpi, stated that he does not know the plaintiff and was not present at the District Awami League General Secretary's residence on August 12. He expressed confusion as to why he was made an accused, as he is not even a member of the District Awami League. Advocate Humayun Kabir also denied any involvement, stating that he has no position within the Awami League and was elected chairman of Burirchar Union as an independent candidate in 2021, defeating the Awami League candidate. He demanded a fair investigation to verify whether he was at Jahangir Kabir's residence on August 12. In response, Barguna Police Station's Officer-in-Charge, Md. Dewan Jaglul Hasan, mentioned that they have not yet received the court's order. Once the order is received, an investigation will be conducted, and a report will be submitted to the court.
